Build site navigation with Menus

Menus turn pages and external destinations into visitor navigation. Work on the menu your navigation block actually renders, and verify every change on the public site.

Before you begin

• List the approved labels and destinations.
• Identify the rendered menu name before editing.
• Record the current order and nesting.
• Use fictional links for training and screenshots.

Select or create the menu

1. Open Content > Menus.
2. Select an existing name in the Menus list.
3. For a new menu, select New Menu, enter Menu Name, and select Create Menu.

The menu name is used by navigation blocks. A new menu does not appear publicly until a rendered block references it.

Add an internal page link

1. Select Add Item.
2. Choose the Page tab.
3. Use Search and select a page....
4. Review the auto-filled Label.
5. Select Add Item.

Use Page for internal destinations so the item retains its page relationship instead of depending on a typed path.

Add a custom or external link

1. Choose the Custom URL tab.
2. Enter an approved full URL or root-relative custom path.
3. Enter a clear Label and verify the destination.

Enable Open in new tab only when another browsing context is genuinely useful. Avoid it for ordinary internal navigation.

Choose parent and item type

Edit or add a child

Hover a top-level item to expose Add child item, Edit item, and Delete item. Add child item opens the same form with the parent selected. Edit item can correct the label, destination, parent, type, and new-tab choice.

Reorder within one level

1. Use the drag handle on an item.
2. Move it to the intended position among siblings.
3. Wait for the item list to refresh.

Dragging between different nesting levels is rejected. Change Parent Item deliberately when an item must enter or leave a dropdown.

Know when changes are public

Menus have no separate Publish button. Changes to a menu already used by a navigation block can change public navigation immediately.

Other signed-in administrators receive mutation updates through the realtime system. Still verify the visitor-facing menu yourself.

Verify every destination

• The selected menu name matches the rendered navigation block.
• Every internal Page item opens the intended page.
• Every Custom URL is approved and correctly formed.
• Labels make sense out of context.
• Top-level and child items work by keyboard and pointer.
• Desktop and 390×844 navigation fit without overflow.

Recover safely

• Use Edit item to correct a destination or parent.
• Drag an item back to its recorded same-level position.
• Delete only a newly added incorrect item after confirming it is not the sole path to important content.
• Duplicate a menu under a new name for a larger redesign, then test before switching the navigation block.
